PDF tools for teachers and schools

Exam papers, worksheets, circulars and student submissions all end up as PDFs. These are the tools teachers and school offices reach for most, with short workflows for the jobs that come round every term.

Workflows

Step by step

Common jobs, in the order you would do them.

Prepare exam documents

From separate section files to one numbered, protected paper.

  1. Combine the cover page, each section and the answer sheet in the order students will see them. Merge PDF
  2. Add page numbers in the footer, for example "Page 3 of 12". Add Page Numbers
  3. While colleagues review it, stamp "Draft" diagonally across every page. Watermark PDF
  4. Set a password on the final copy before you email it to the exam office. Protect PDF

Turn paper worksheets into a shareable PDF

Useful for absent students and for posting on a class page.

  1. Scan each page with your phone camera; crop and straighten before saving. Scan to PDF
  2. Run OCR so students can search the text and screen readers can read it. OCR PDF
  3. Compress the file so it uploads quickly to the school platform. Compress PDF

Mark submissions on screen

Feedback without printing a stack of essays.

  1. Open the submission and highlight, underline or comment in the margin. Annotate PDF
  2. Download the marked copy and return it to the student.

Privacy notes

  • Exam papers are sensitive until the exam starts. Password-protect copies that travel by email, and use a different channel to share the password.
  • Student work can contain names and personal details. Files processed on our servers are deleted within 2 hours, and you can delete them straight away from the download screen.
  • Page tools such as merge, split and rotate run in your browser for everyday file sizes, so those files are not uploaded at all.

Read how files are handled on the security page.

FAQ

Questions

Can I edit an old exam paper that only exists as a PDF?

Yes. Convert it with PDF to Word, edit the questions in Word or Google Docs, then save it as PDF again. Scanned papers need OCR first so the text can be recognised.

How do I stop students opening a question paper early?

Protect the PDF with a password and share the password only when the exam starts. Keep in mind that a password protects the file, not a printed copy.

Is there a limit on how many papers I can process?

No. Every tool is free for personal use and needs no account. Compress, merge and split take files up to 2 GB.

Can students use these tools on a school Chromebook?

Yes. Everything runs in a web browser, so there is nothing to install on Chromebooks, tablets or phones.
