Drop one PDF or a whole folder and get the page count, page size, version and an approximate word count for every file.
The PDF page counter reads one PDF or a batch and lists each file with its page count, page size, file size, PDF version, password status, title, author and an approximate word count. Totals sit above the table, which downloads as CSV. Files are read in your browser, free and without an account.
Step by step
Drag one or more PDFs onto the drop zone or click Choose PDF files. You can keep adding files later with Add more PDFs; each one becomes a new row in the table.
Each row shows pages, page size, file size, version, password status, title or author and a word count. The totals for files, pages and words sit above the table and update as counting finishes.
Click Download table as CSV to get pdf-page-count.csv for a spreadsheet, or Clear list to start a new batch. Your PDFs themselves are not changed in any way.
Features
Drop a whole folder of PDFs and every file gets its own row. The total number of files, pages and words is shown above the table, so a print or translation quote needs no adding up.
Sizes are named as A4, Letter, Legal, A3, A5, B5 or Tabloid with portrait or landscape, or given in millimetres. A file whose pages differ is marked Mixed, followed by the size of its first page.
See the PDF version from the header and catalog, whether the file is password protected, and the title and author stored in it. Files that open only with a password are marked Needs password.
Each file is opened in your browser. The tool reads the page tree for the count, measures the pages and names the size (A4, Letter, Legal, A3, A5, B5 or Tabloid with its orientation, otherwise millimetres), takes the version from the file header and catalog, and checks for password protection. A second pass reads the text layer to estimate the words.
Page counts matter more often than you would expect. Print shops and copy centres price by the page, court and grant portals cap filings at a set length, and translators quote by the word. Opening each file in a viewer and scrolling to the end is slow when there are twenty of them. This counter puts the numbers for the whole batch in one table, with a grand total at the top.
The word count is an estimate taken from the text layer, the same text you can select in a viewer. Hyphenated words split across lines and figures in tables are counted as they appear. A scanned page holds pictures of words rather than text, so it counts as zero; run it through OCR PDF first if you need its words counted.
Once you know the numbers, the next step is usually a change to the file. Trim a document that runs over a page limit with Delete Pages or cut it into parts with Split PDF. Join short files into one with Merge PDF, and if a file shows as password protected, Unlock PDF removes the password when you know it.
Counting happens in your browser. The PDFs are read on your device and never leave it, nothing about them is kept after you close the tab, and Clear list empties the table at once. The tool is free, needs no account and has no limit on how many files you check.

It counts the words in the text layer, so it matches what you could copy out of the PDF. Expect small differences from a word processor around hyphenation, page numbers and running headers, which are counted as words here.
A scan stores each page as an image, so there is no text to count. Make the file searchable with OCR PDF first, then add the new file here and the words on every page are counted.
Not every page in the file has the same size or orientation, for example a Letter report with an A3 drawing folded in. The column then shows the size of the first page after the word Mixed.
Files with only an owner password, which limits printing or copying, are counted normally and marked Yes. A file that needs a password just to open is marked Needs password, because its pages cannot be read until it is unlocked.
The version comes from the header at the start of the file, such as 1.4 or 1.7. When the document catalog declares a newer version, as some editors do after saving changes, the newer number is shown instead.
Yes. It is free, there is nothing to sign up for, and you can check as many files as you like. The PDFs are read in your browser and are not sent anywhere.
