PDF to Markdown pulls the text out of a PDF and writes it as a .md file. Lines set larger than the body text become #, ## or ### headings, bullet and numbered lines become lists, and wrapped lines join into paragraphs. It is free, needs no account, and uploads are deleted within 2 hours.
Step by step
Drag one or more PDFs into the drop zone or click Choose PDF files. Each PDF needs a text layer; scanned pages should go through OCR PDF first.
There are no settings to fill in. The converter reads the text and font sizes, marks headings and lists, and a progress bar shows each file as it is handled.
One PDF comes back as a .md file with the same name, so report.pdf becomes report.md. Several PDFs come back together in one archive called markdown-files.zip.
Features
Text set noticeably larger than the body is turned into a Markdown heading, with the largest size as # and smaller ones as ## and ###. A heading that wraps over two lines stays one heading.
Lines starting with a bullet, a dash or a number followed by a full stop become Markdown list items. Ordinary lines are joined into paragraphs, so the file is not broken at every line end.
The output is UTF-8 Markdown that opens in any text editor, notes app, wiki or code repository. Body lines that start with # or > are escaped so they stay ordinary text.
The converter extracts the text in reading layout and, separately, the font size of every line. The size used for most of the text counts as body text, and larger sizes are ranked into up to three heading levels. Images are not exported, and tables come out as lines of text rather than Markdown tables.
PDF is built for printing, so its text is stored as positioned lines with no idea of what a heading or a list is. Copying from a viewer gives you broken lines and loses the structure. Markdown keeps structure as plain text, which is why wikis, notes apps and code repositories use it. This converter rebuilds that structure from clues inside the PDF.
The main clue is type size. Most documents use one size for body text and larger sizes for titles and section heads, and the converter ranks those sizes into heading levels. Documents that mark headings only with bold at body size come out as paragraphs, and multi-column layouts may interleave their columns. Read the file through and adjust headings by hand where needed.
Scanned PDFs have no text to extract, so the job stops with a message. Run them through OCR PDF first, then convert the searchable copy. For plain text without Markdown marks, use PDF to Text; for an editable document with its layout, PDF to Word. Going the other way, Markdown to PDF turns a .md file into a formatted PDF.
PDF to Markdown runs on our servers. Your PDFs are converted automatically with no one reading them, and both the PDFs and the Markdown files are deleted from our servers within 2 hours. No account is needed and there is no limit on the number of conversions.

The converter finds the font size used for most of the text and treats it as body text. Any line set at least about 15% larger becomes a heading, with the largest size as # and the next sizes as ## and ###.
No. Images are left out, and tables come out as lines of text in reading order rather than Markdown tables. For tables you need to work with as data, PDF to Excel is the better choice.
A scan contains pictures of pages and no text layer, so there is nothing to convert. Run it through OCR PDF to add text, then convert the new file to Markdown.
Each PDF becomes a .md file named after it, and all of them are packed into one download called markdown-files.zip. A single PDF comes back as a plain .md file.
No. The converter keeps headings, lists and paragraphs, but inline styling such as bold, italic and links is not carried over, so the Markdown stays clean and easy to edit.
Yes. The PDFs you send and the Markdown files made from them are removed from our servers within 2 hours, and you do not need an account to use the converter.
