Key takeaways

  • Choose the tool by what you are keeping. Removing a few pages suits Delete Pages; keeping only a few suits Extract Pages.
  • Pick pages by thumbnail, not by the number printed in the footer, which often differs from the page's real position.
  • Mac Preview and the iPhone Preview app (iOS 26 and later) can delete pages for free. Acrobat's mobile app needs a subscription to delete pages.
  • Removing a page does not shrink the file in exact proportion, because fonts and images shared with other pages stay in the file.
  • To hide one line on a page you are keeping, delete nothing: use redaction.

To remove pages from a PDF, open it in a page tool that shows thumbnails, mark the pages you do not want and save a new copy. On a Mac, Preview does this for free; on an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, the Preview app does too; on Windows, Android or any browser, a free online tool such as Siliph's Delete Pages works without installing anything.

It sounds like a one-click job, and usually it is. The mistakes happen around it: deleting page 7 in the viewer when the footer said page 7 was somewhere else, sending a file that still contains the "removed" content in another form, or trimming 40 pages one click at a time when keeping 3 would have been quicker. This guide covers the methods for each device and those traps.

How to remove pages with Siliph Delete Pages

Delete Pages shows every page as a thumbnail. Each click marks a page for removal, and a second click brings it back. It is free, needs no account, and handles files up to 200 MB and 2,000 pages.

  1. Open Delete Pages and drag the PDF into the drop zone, or tap Choose a PDF file on a phone.
  2. Under Select pages to delete, click each page you want gone. The counter shows how many are marked. Pages do not need to be next to each other.
  3. Click Process instantly, or Delete Pages if the file is too large to run in your browser.
  4. Download the new PDF and scroll through it once to confirm the right pages went.

The pages you keep are copied into the new file as they are, without being re-encoded, so text and scans look exactly the same. Your original file is not changed.

Keeping only a few pages instead

If you need 3 pages out of 80, marking 77 thumbnails is the slow way. In Extract Pages, type the pages to keep in the Pages to extract box, for example "1-3, 5, 7-9", and you get one new PDF with just those pages. The output follows the order you type, so "9, 2" puts page 9 first.

Watch out for page numbers that do not match

The number your PDF viewer shows is the page's position in the file. The number printed in the footer is whatever the author typed. They often disagree: a report with a cover, a contents page and roman-numbered front matter might print "1" on its fifth page.

Thumbnails avoid the problem, because you remove the page you can see rather than a number you typed. If you must use numbers, for example in Extract Pages, check the viewer's position count, not the footer. After trimming, Add Page Numbers can renumber the shorter file so the footer matches the new count.

How to remove pages on a Mac, iPhone and other devices

Mac: Preview

Apple's instructions: "Choose View > Thumbnails or View > Contact Sheet, select the page or pages to delete, then press the Delete key on your keyboard (or choose Edit > Delete)" (Apple Preview User Guide). Apple notes that deleting a page also removes the annotations on it. Preview "automatically saves changes for you as you work" (Apple), so duplicate the file first if you want to keep the original.

iPhone and iPad: Preview app

From iOS 26, open the PDF in the Preview app, tap the thumbnails button, touch and hold a thumbnail and tap Delete Page (Apple iPhone User Guide). On older versions of iOS, use a browser tool such as Delete Pages in Safari.

Adobe Acrobat

In the desktop app, select All tools > Organize pages, hover over a thumbnail and choose Delete. Adobe notes that "You must leave at least one page in the document" (Adobe). On phones, Adobe states: "You need an Adobe Acrobat subscription to delete pages in a PDF" (Adobe). The free Acrobat Reader is a viewer; Adobe says you "cannot make permanent changes" to PDFs with it (Adobe Reader FAQ).

Windows and Android: the print trick

Browsers and Windows can "print" selected pages to a new PDF: open the PDF in Chrome or Edge, choose Print, pick Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer, and enter a custom page range. It works in a pinch, but it creates a fresh PDF by printing, so interactive extras such as form fields, links and bookmarks may not survive, and you are choosing pages by number rather than by sight. A thumbnail-based tool is safer for anything important.

Common jobs and how to handle them

  • Blank pages from a double-sided scan: look for the white thumbnails and click each one. Check faint pages closely, because a light pencil note can look blank in a small preview.
  • A cover sheet or fax header before a bank statement goes to a landlord: delete the first page and keep the rest.
  • The answer key at the back of an exam paper: delete the last pages before printing copies for students.
  • A duplicate page after merging two files: compare neighbouring thumbnails, remove the copy, then check the order.
  • Only the signed page is needed: use Extract Pages to keep that one page.

What removing a page does not do

Deleting a page takes it out of the file entirely, including its text and images. Two related problems need different tools:

  • One confidential line on a page you are keeping: use Redact PDF, which removes matching text rather than hiding it. Our guide to redacting a PDF properly explains why a black box is not enough.
  • A file that is still too large after trimming: fonts or images shared with the pages you kept stay in the file, so the saving can be smaller than the page count suggests. Run Compress PDF afterwards; our guide to compressing a PDF to a specific size helps with upload limits.

On privacy, Delete Pages is a hybrid tool. Small PDFs are trimmed in your browser. Larger ones go over an encrypted upload, are processed automatically with nobody viewing them, and are deleted from Siliph's servers within 2 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete a single page from a PDF?

Upload the PDF to Delete Pages, click the thumbnail of the page you want to remove so it is marked, then run the task and download the new file. Every page you did not mark stays in its original order.

Can I remove pages from a PDF without Adobe Acrobat?

Yes. Mac Preview, the iPhone Preview app on iOS 26 or later and free browser tools such as Delete Pages all remove pages without Acrobat. The free Acrobat Reader cannot make permanent changes to a PDF.

Does deleting pages reduce the quality of the remaining pages?

No. The kept pages are copied into the new PDF without being re-encoded, so text, images and scans look exactly as before.

Why is the PDF still large after I removed pages?

Fonts and images used by the pages you kept, such as a logo on every page, remain in the file. Removing pages helps most when the deleted pages held their own large scans or photos. Compress the result if you need a bigger cut.

Can I get a deleted page back?

Not from the new file. Siliph never changes your original PDF, so keep it until you have checked the trimmed copy. If you used Preview, which saves automatically, make a duplicate before editing.
